Irlen Syndrome can cause headaches and nausea

A teenage girl came to see us today.. she is doing Advanced English and Extension English. She also has Irlen Syndrome .. in Advanced English, she gets no support from the teacher and is struggling.. in Extension English, the teacher provides support for her and she is doing really well. This girl gets a headache and nauseous everyday when she has to work on white paper (which is the norm). She was able to do our tasks, and read successfully without getting a headache when she used the appropriately tinted overlay. She then returned for to be fitted for the correct individualised filters worn as glasses. These are more efficient at reducing glare from both the printed page and also the peripheral light in the classroom and from devices.

When she completed her HSC exams she wore her glasses and was able to complete all of her exams without headaches or nausea, so was then able to go home and prepare for the next exam without being completely drained.

If you or a loved one get headaches and nausea when reading or being under bright light it may be that they have Irlen Syndrome and need some individual specifically tinted lenses to remove these symptoms.
