Can I Help My Child Learn?

Have you ever felt frustrated when trying to help your children understand their schoolwork? When homework has to be done and their children don't know how to do it, many parents feel upset because they cannot help them. This often leads to tears, tantrums, anger and frustration and it becomes a self-defeating exercise and a totally negative experience for both children and parents.

This book has been written especially for parents who want to help their children learn. It contains specific proven strategies that I have used to help children who have had problems understanding basic english and mathematical concepts.

I have also included helpful hints for the parents so that they can understand why their child may be having problems. It is important for parents to understand how their child is feeling and how they feel when they are trying their best, but still not being able to "get it".

The book is written in an easy-to-read style without the use of educational jargon so that parents who may also have struggled at school can understand how to explain things to their children

HINT: We all need to be able to make the correct sound for each letter of the alphabet, before we can start to read successfully. Once we know the individual sounds, we can then learn that particular combinations of letters make particular sounds. Being able to correctly sound out each letter is more important to learning to read than being able to name the letters correctly.

STRATEGY: Point to the individual letters of the alphabet on an alphabet chart, and ask the child to make the sound of that letter. Identify those that they can "get right" and focus on those initially, and then work on those that they may be having difficulty with. This is a similar process described above for learning the names of the letters. You can reinforce this by finding particular letters in words in a children's book and
1) asking them to make the sound of the letter you are pointing at and/or
2) you make a letter sound, and ask them to find that letter in any words on a selected page of print from a children's book.


There seems to be a common perception that if a child can read, they should also be able to spell. This is not the case. Reading and spelling are totally different skills.

When we are reading, our brains are looking for letter patterns in the text, which then allows us to work out what the words are. Reading involves recognition.

When we are spelling, we are copying letter patterns from our brain, which then allows us to correctly spell the word. Spelling involves visual memory and listening skills.



Countless parents have experienced the frustration of feeling helpless when it comes to helping their child learn. I believe that many parents will relate to the fact that some children are labelled as "lazy" or a "daydreamer" and will find hope in the author's assertion that in most cases, the child is trying, but through no fault of their own, encountering difficulties. I love the tips that you offer in each section - these reinforce to the parent that they need to reward their child's efforts, even if they do not get every answer correct. The maths section would also be a great help to parents who sometimes struggle to understand new ways of teaching in this subject.

This book would be a great resource for all parents. It would give them to tools to be able to help their child and the information is easy to understand. Your experience as a teacher shines through in this guide and I believe parents would be very grateful for your advice.

Joan the authorJoan started her working life as an office clerk and after marrying and having two children, she returned to study. She gained her Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences and Psychology and worked as a teacher of Infants and High School students for a number of years.

During that time, she developed a desire to help children who were struggling at school because she could relate to that. Her academic success at school was limited but after returning to study and gaining excellent academic results, she realised that it is never too late to learn and that everyone has the potential to achieve what they want in life if they want it badly enough.

She has carried that philosophy through to her present career where she helps children who are having difficulty learning to read because of a visual perceptual dysfunction called Irlen Syndrome. Her desire to help those children regain their self-esteem and self-confidence resulted in her book "Can I Help My Child Learn?".

The parents of the children who are having difficulties are always keen to learn how they can help their child move forward in their learning. As a result of this, Joan wrote her book with them in mind. Many of those parents will do anything that they can to help their child, but they are not teachers, so lack the knowledge of how to go about helping them. Headaches, Migraines, Stress & Strain

Many people who have Irlen Syndrome also experience headaches and migraines every day, due to their light sensitivity. If you experience chronic headaches or migraines, it is worth investigating if you could be helped by Irlen lenses.

Irlen Syndrome Causes An Overstimulation Of Our Visual Pathways

ADD/ADHD Or Irlen Syndrome?

There is a large overlap between the symptoms of ADD/ADHD and Irlen Syndrome. Many people who are suffering from Irlen Syndrome can be mislabelled as ADD/ADHD due to the similarity in observed behaviour between these two conditions. These observations include looking away from the page and daydreaming ("inattentiveness"), an inability to concentrate for long periods of time on reading and/or writing tasks, rushing through while reading or writing and, in the case of children, "giving up" on trying to do their schoolwork or homework.

These are all strategies to help them cope with the visual stress that they experience when working on white paper under bright lights. Wearing Irlen Spectral Filters helps them to focus more on the tasks required, as it reduces the amount of effort required to do their work. In addition, they are able to concentrate for longer, and maintain their attention to the task. Once these things start to happen, they become more motivated and this often results in increased self confidence.

Light & Irlen Syndrome

The Relationship Between Light and Irlen Syndrome

White light (including sunlight) contains all of the colours of the rainbow. These colours form what we know as the VISIBLE SPECTRUM of light. Our brain "sees" (perceives) light as waves of energy and each colour has a different energy from the others. When light strikes a solid surface, it is reflected, much like the waves in the ocean are reflected when they strike the rocks. A white surface reflects all of the light that strikes it, but coloured surfaces absorb some colours and reflect the rest.

The diagrams below show the visible spectrum of light as it appears to us in the rainbow and also how each colour travels through the air. Our brain learns to recognise the colours by the amount of energy that they contain. The diagram shows that the Violet colour has the highest energy and the Red has the lowest energy.

Note that the Dark Red wavelengths have lower energy than the Indigo. This is shown by the different wavelengths of each colour. Light travels through air in waves of energy and the diagram shows us that there are ten Violet wave peaks but only six Dark Red wave peaks in the same space. This means that the Violet colour has more energy than the Dark Red.

People who have Irlen Syndrome are sensitive to particular wavelengths of light (colours) and these interfere with how their brain processes visual information.

In the diagrams below, a box is used to demonstrate how the colours of the rainbow can interfere with how people with Irlen Syndrome perceive what they are looking at. Remember that light is reflected whenever it hits a solid surface.


When we look at a white surface, all of the colours of the rainbow (the visible spectrum) are mixed up in the white light that we see and all of the colours are reflected into our eyes. Our eyes send messages to our brain and our brain processes ("works out") what we are looking at. In this diagram, there is no interference from the colours so this person can see the box clearly. This is how it would appear to a person without Irlen Syndrome.

For people with Irlen Syndrome, some of the colours of the rainbow cause problems with the messages that their eyes send to their brain. This interferes with how their brain processes the visual information being

If we block those colours of the rainbow that cause problems with the messages, the messages can function normally again, and the brain can process the information correctly. In the example below, a red coloured overlay has been used over the box and this is preventing the Blue and the Indigo colours from being transmitted to the eyes, and this allows the messages to work properly.

In the next diagram, Irlen Spectral Filters are used to "filter out" those wavelengths of light instead of an overlay. In this case, all colours are reflected from the box, but the lenses refract (bend) those particular colours and prevent them from entering the eyes.

The Blue and Indigo colours are not removed until they reach the Irlen filters. They are then prevented from entering the eyes.



White surfaces reflect all of the wavelengths of light (the spectrum of colours) and for people with Irlen Syndrome, some of these wavelengths of light interfere with the processing of the visual signals that come from the eyes. Even without Irlen lenses or overlays, it is possible to make it easier for people to read and write if we use coloured paper instead of white. For example, Blue paper absorbs all colours other than Blue, and so it is only the blue wavelength of light that is reflected into the eyes. So, if the person is sensitive to colours other than blue, blue paper will help them to see the words more clearly, write the words more clearly and enable them to concentrate on their work more efficiently. The same applies to all other colours. Some people have difficulty reading on Blue paper, but many people can read better on blue paper. That is where the specificity of the colours comes in. Everyone who has Irlen is sensitive to particular colours or combinations of colours, so the selection of the best overlay and Irlen lenses for them results in the specific colour or combinations of colours that works best for them alone. 

Many students find it much easier to do their work on coloured paper instead of white paper. In order to help them, we have coloured exercise books printed up especially for those students who find it easier to concentrate on coloured paper. These exercise books are provided as 8mm lines, 12mm lines, 5mm grid, 10mm grid and handwriting lines.

Services Offered by Us

We offer an assessment of the presence and severity of the symptoms of Irlen Syndrome. Once determined that the symptoms are present, we then determine what colour helps to remove the symptoms. Each individual with symptoms is sensitive to particular colours, so when this is identified, we provide relief in the form of overlays and/or Irlen Spectral Filters, which are worn as glasses.

We also offer coloured paper exercise books for students with Irlen Syndrome. These books are Australian made, using 70gsm paper printed with black lines for writing.

For children experiencing specific reading problems, we can sometimes offer strategies to help them overcome these difficulties.
